THROWING ON BATS
๐ธ Priority to members ๐ธ
Service Description
Throwing plates can be one of the most satisfying and challenging exercises on the wheel. This workshop will guide you through various methods of making plates, using bats to support large, delicate forms without distortion. Over the course of two 3-hour sessions, youโll learn how to centre wider amounts of clay, control thickness across the form, and shape clean, functional curves that hold their own through drying and firing. Itโs a chance to hone your skills, whether youโre aiming for elegant dinner plates, rustic serving platters, or stackable pieces with character. ๐ PROGRAM ๐ Across both sessions, you'll explore how to: ๐ Use bats to throw and transport plates safely ๐ Manage clay distribution and avoid cracking or warping ๐ Shape flat forms with lifted edges and harmonious profiles ๐ Refine your trimming techniques for foot rings and plate bases ๐ Experiment with design: stacking sets, decorative rims, textures ๐ PRICE ๐ ๐ธ The price includes all the clay and the bisque firing for your thrown and trimmed plates made during the workshop. ๐ธ The time required for glazing your work is not included in the workshop fee (see the 'Glazing' section below). ๐ SMALL GROUP ๐ We keep the group to a maximum of 7 participants, ensuring an immersive and hands-on learning experience. Thatโs just 14 hands shaping circles together, with time and space to grow. ๐ GLAZING & FINISHING ๐ Roughly 10 days after the second session, your work will be bisque-fired to 950ยฐC. You can then glaze your plates: ๐ธ If youโve never glazed in our studio, sign up for a Glazing Intro Class (see the "Intro Courses" menu) ๐ธ If you're already familiar with our glazing process, book a table during a Member Session (with or without a Membership Pass) ๐ธ We can glaze your work for you with a glossy transparent glaze for โฌ5 per piece and with any other colored glaze for 8โฌ per piece. โ ๏ธ TERMS AND CONDITIONS โ ๏ธ ๐ธ Please ensure you can attend both days of the course, as sessions are typically full and we cannot move participants between sessions. ๐ธ If you'd like to keep working on your plates between sessions or after the workshop is done (e.g. refining, decorating), you may book a table or wheel during member hours, this is not included in the workshop fee. ๐ธ Please review our cancellation policy carefully at the bottom of the page.
